James Gunther's Bio:

James Gunther is a percussionist and music educator from Vermont. He graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor in Music Education in 2012. He then began his master's degree in percussion performance at Central Michigan University, studying with Dr. Andrew Spencer. His past teachers include Dan Armstrong, Giff Howarth, and Brian Fronzaglia. James performed with Penn State instrumental ensembles at venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kimmel Center and the Kennedy Center. As a vocalist, James joined the Penn State Glee Club in trips to New Zealand, as well as MENC and Eastern ACDA conferences. James was awarded first place in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition at Penn State in 2008, performing Ney Rosauro's "Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra." In 2011, he performed Daniel McCarthy's "Chamber Symphony for Marimba and Winds" with the Penn State Wind Ensemble. During his student teaching experience, James taught K-6th grade general music classes, as well as 4th-12th grade band classes. His band placement consisted of private and group lessons as well as large ensemble rehearsals. James has taught beginning through advanced percussion student as well as beginner through intermediate brass and reed students. James is seeking a teaching career in which he can provide students the tools to access their highest musical potential and develop a knowledgeable appreciation and literacy of music. James believes that students should be taught to value excellence through hard work, sacrifice, dedication and pride. These attributes also teach students to demonstrate behaviors, skills and knowledge essential in being a contributing member of a democratic society.
